[Everything has felt so wrong since he woke up. The only thing that's made any sense has been the attractive volunteer from the hospital. Maybe it was because his was the first face that he saw or he remembers him speaking to him while he was in the coma. Or because he still can't remember anything from his life before the coma.

They tell him he's married to Kristopher but he doesn't feel anything for him. David thinks that even if he can't remember him, something in his soul should recognize the person he's supposed to love. He shouldn't be standing in the middle of a party meant for him and nothing clicks in his head. They all seem very nice and friendly and understanding.

David doesn't want to talk to a single one of them.

He slips out after he finishes the dishes. It was just meant to be a walk, to clear his head and he doesn't realize where he's headed until he spots him. Matthew. Doing something in a tree. Probably not smart to startle him, he realizes after the school teacher nearly falls off the ladder.]

Do you often do yard work in the dark?

Do you often skip out on your own parties?

[ He actually feels himself smirk some at that before he remembers himself and looks back down at the birdhouse he had been trying to put up. It was just... so easy to talk to him. From the day he finally opened his eyes and was no longer the sleeping John Doe. And yet it hurt to just look at him let alone hear him.

Matt shifts on the ladder before putting a knee on the top step and going back to what he was doing, hoping maybe if he ignored the other man he might take the hint and leave. ]

I don't know.

[David says it easily and with a smile that it's hard to tell at first that he's actually making fun of himself and not just making a joke. He honestly has no idea if he's that kind of man. He imagines he'll go home later and Kristopher will be upset and the only thing he'll be able to do is shrug at his husband and go to bed.

Is he the kind of man who cheats on his husband? Apparently he's the kind of man who thinks about it, since he doesn't stick his hands into his jacket and move on. Matthew Blanchard is too interesting to pass along.]

Need any help?

[ He glances over at the other man when he hears that tone. Matt actually forgot for a moment that he wouldn't know that. He holds back a sigh and goes back to the bird house. ]

No, thank you.

[ Even though the ladder is tipping slightly forward and Matt has to rear back to stop it from falling over. He sighs through his nose anyway. Dammit. ]

I got this, okay? You should get back to your party.

[Two seconds, five seconds, ten seconds later.... he's still standing there.]

I'd rather hang a bird house with you.

[Which is really more of a commentary about the party than any sort of love decoration for the other man. It's not a bad party. He just thinks maybe he's the sort of man who doesn't enjoy them as much as his husband thinks he should. He doesn't know if he was just lying before or if he's changed and the night air is doing wonders for his headache.]

It's not a lot of fun standing around people who I can't remember and knowing that's all they want.

[ He looks back over at David, brow raised. Was he flirting with him? The latter part, at least, sounds more like him. Not sure how Matt knows that... He has no idea how David was before he woke up. ]

You could always talk to them. Let them help you remember. If they're your friends, I'm sure they want to help.

[Does it count as flirting if you are also using it as an excuse to keep on avoiding your spouse? Serious question.]

They do. Everyone seems very nice and very helpful. Which I think makes it worse.

[David can't explain why he's opening up so much to Matthew when he hardly knows him. Which yes, he barely knows anyone in this small town but he's been told that he and the school teacher had nothing in common before his accident. He feels comfortable for reasons he can't put his finger on.]

I feel like I'm letting them down. It's not like that with you.
